What you're carrying
doesn't have to

define the path forward.

Therapy that works with you, not just on you.

What brings people through our door

Our therapists have deep experience across these areas. Each one requires something different and ACT is flexible enough to meet all of them with the same underlying rigor.

Most therapy tries to change how you feel.

ACT changes what those feelings can do.

If you have tried to challenge your thoughts, reduce your anxiety, or think your way out of what is holding you back, and it was not enough, you are not alone. You are not the problem.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, works from a different place. It does not ask you to feel less before you can live more. It helps you clarify the kind of life you want to build, then develop the skills to move toward it, even when difficult thoughts, emotions, memories, or sensations come along for the ride.

At Rhode Island ACT, every therapist is trained specifically in ACT, not as one technique among many, but as a practical framework for understanding how people get stuck and how they begin to move again. The work is active, grounded, and centered on your values, not someone else’s idea of what recovery should look like.

WHAT WE DO DIFFERENLY

It is not about fixing what you feel, it's about changing how you respond.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is built on a simple but powerful idea:

" The problem is rarely the thought or feeling itself,

it's the struggle with it and what that struggle costs you in terms of the life you want to live. "

ACT doesn't ask you to think positively or feel differently. It teaches you to hold difficult experiences more lightly, to know what matters to you, and to act in that direction. Over time, that builds a kind of psychological flexibility that most people find more useful than any specific coping technique.

With over 1,600 published studies behind it, ACT is one of the most evidence-based approaches available and it's the foundation of everything we do here.

  We Start Where You Are

The first conversation is about understanding what's actually happening in your life — not fitting you into a diagnostic box. What's getting in the way and what do you want to be moving toward?

We build practical
skills together

Sessions are active and collaborative. You'll learn specific skills for changing your relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings — skills that work outside the therapy room.

We keep moving toward what matters

The goal is never symptom elimination — it's building a life that feels meaningful and workable, even when hard things show up. That's a different kind of progress, and a more durable one.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

The first step is

just a conversation.

Whatever brought you here today — that matters.

You don't need the right words or a clear plan.

Just reach out, and we'll take it from there.
